Smoke alarms save lives and help protect your possessions and property. At night we are at the greatest of risk since humans lose all sense of smell while asleep. Smoke alarms detect smoke well before any sleeping occupant and provide critical seconds to implement actions to save life and property. Smoke alarms are designed to detect fire smoke and emit a loud and distinctive sound to alert occupants of potential danger. Don’t forget, older homes which may not be required by law to have smoke alarms installed are also risk. Checking your smoke alarm periodically is paramount for the safety of your family and in the case of a residential investment is a legal requirement with specific legislative requirements to follow. Test Your Alarm Monthly! Testing your smoke alarm involves more than just testing or changing the battery. Testing of a smoke alarm goes far beyond just pushing the “test” button on your smoke alarm.
No one should live in a house that does not have a smoke alarm!
Although you probably know the importance of smoke alarms, the sad truth is that almost all smoke alarms are not tested or do not even have working batteries which makes them completely useless. At Wilco Electrical Services, we specialise in installing smoke alarms and all associated electrical services. To safeguard your home and your business from fire, call us today and have one of our electricians visit your home to install or replace your smoke alarms. We recommend that all smoke detectors have a lithium battery installed as well as a backup battery. We also recommend that you test them every 6 months to ensure they are working as they should.
What is a smoke alarm?
A smoke alarm is a device that is built to detect smoke. Most smoke alarms work by optical detection or by physical process, while others can use both detection methods to increase sensitivity to smoke. Smoke alarms in big commercial, commercial, and residential buildings are usually powered by a central fire alarm system.
We can perform a safety inspection and test of all the smoke alarms in your premises which involves:
● Spraying the unit with a special spray ensuring the unit will detect smoke in the event of a fire;
● Cleaning the unit to ensure it is free from debris;
● Replacing batteries;
● A written report.
Different types of smoke detectors
There are four types of smoke alarms on the market:
Cheapest and very sensitive to small amounts of smoke from fires produced from paper or wood. They will detect these fires before the smoke has the ability to become too thick. They are less sensitive to slow burning fires which give off larger quantities of smoke before flaming occurs. They can also be a bit over‐sensitive in kitchens.
These are more expensive but more effective at detecting larger particles of smoke produced by slow‐burning fires, such as smouldering foam‐filled upholstery and overheated PVC wiring. They are less sensitive to fast flaming fires. Optical alarms can be installed near kitchens, as they are less likely than ionisation alarms to go off when toast is burned.
Combinations of optical and heat alarms in one unit to reduce false alarms while increasing the speed of detection. Each smoke alarm is very similar and is powered either by a battery, or mains electricity. Some smoke alarms are interlinked with other so that any smoke detected in one room can raise the alarm in all others. This interlink can be achieved with radio‐interlinked smoke alarms. In a standard smoke alarm, the battery will need to be replaced every year. Some people find their alarms are frequently set off when they are cooking. This is because a smoke alarm installed inside the kitchen must be a heat alarm and not a smoke alarm.
Which smoke detector should I choose?
Kitchen and Garage: Heat Smoke Alarms
Landings: Ionisation Smoke Alarms
Bedrooms and living room: Optical Smoke Alarms
How many smoke alarms do I need?
The more you have, the higher the level of protection you have! General rule is that you have one in each room. If your home consists of only one floor, one smoke alarm could be enough to keep you safe. If your home has multiple floors, at least one smoke alarm should be installed in each floor.
Where should I install?
Smoke alarms are usually installed onto the ceilings and should be fitted as close to the centre of the room as possible, but at least 50 centimetres away from any wall or light fitting. You should always make sure that your alarm is fitted in a place where it can be heard throughout your entire property. If your home is on one floor, you should fit the alarm in the hallway between the living and sleeping areas so you can hear it even when you are asleep. If you have only one smoke alarm and two floors, put it where you can hear it when you are asleep.
