Common data cable types
Data cables are used to transmit any electronic signals from a transmitter to a receiver and share the information. Normally, these cables are made from fiber optics or copper. The two most common types of cable using in networking is Cat 5 and Cat 6.
- Cat 5 or category 5 cables: this is a twisted pair cable for carrying cable. It is the best solution for your home and small and medium businesses as this cable type supports networks at Gigabit Ethernet speeds (1000 Mbps), and 100 Mhz.
- Cat 6 or category 6 cables: supports network speeds up to 10 Gigabits and 250 Mhz. This cable becomes more and more common since nowadays, more applications require more bandwidth and Cat 6 can satisfy this requirement. Cat 6 cables is ideal for businesses as these cables have a higher transmission performance and lower chance of data loss or corruption. Recently, its popularity is growing among households as well. While it is a bit more expensive than Cat 5, the cost is justified with its additional benefits.
